Position Summary:
Reporting to the Vice President, Academic, the Dean, Faculty of Arts is a dynamic, senior leader who works with a talented and dedicated team of administrators and faculty to realize the vision of Seneca's Strategic Plan. Overseeing the schools of Arts & Science, English & Liberal Studies, the English Language Institute and Academic Upgrading programs, the Dean leads the ideation, development, implementation and evaluation of innovative academic programming across the faculty. Driven to provide an exemplary student experience, the Dean will, in collaboration with other areas of Seneca, identify, support and/or lead opportunities for expansion and improvement to existing programming and partnerships. The Dean is accountable for the strategy, direction, planning, development, quality assurance, budgeting and ongoing review of courses and programs in the Faculty of Arts.

With a global vision and a deep commitment to and accomplishments in advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion among students, faculty, administrators, and staff in a complex organizational setting, the Dean will champion and propel academic priorities including indigenization of the curriculum, digital learning and citizenship, global and cultural awareness and teaching excellence. An accomplished academic, the Dean understands the role of research and scholarship can foster an environment that promotes faculty development and success.


Responsibilities

Leadership and Strategic Planning

Maps the future direction of the Faculty of Arts through the development of a clear, distinct and achievable long-term plan which includes the development, prioritization, renewal and expansion of courses and programs, HR planning, enrolment planning and student mobility through internal and external pathways and partnerships;

Develops, implements and monitors processes to engage Academic Chairs and Managers in collaborative decision-making, with communication and involvement mechanisms to engage faculty and staff in the goals of the College and opportunities in the Schools;

Provides transformational and visionary leadership to the Faculty of Arts academic leadership team to ensure its course offerings and programs have the resources and facilities required to include distinctive learning experiences, are differentiated, and offer diverse and transferable skills;

Develops and implements plans for enrolment management across all the Schools in the Faculty of Arts and ensures quality, financial, human resource, physical resource and program diversity elements are in place to meet established objectives;

Collaborates with peers to ensure consistency, coherence and connection of curriculum across programs, faculties and the institution;

Leads the development and implementation of entrepreneurial initiatives pertinent to the portfolio;

Advances the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) within the faculty;

Leads the development of strategic relationships with local communities, businesses and professional associations, as well as community and municipal partners, to ensure relevancy of courses and develop new programs and establish outstanding opportunities for Seneca students;

Works collaboratively with schools and departments across Seneca in the development and implementation of systems, service initiatives and business process redesign to ensure a coordinated and high-performance operation;

Represents Seneca on provincial and national academic leadership committees;

Serves as a member of the Deans Committee and other committees; may serve as lead on some committees.[/list]



Operational Management
Provides leadership to a large portfolio under the Academic division;

Develops and implements an annual business plan that aligns with Seneca’s Strategic Plan;

Oversees and is accountable for the Faculty’s enrolment plan and budget;

Develops preliminary budget for the schools within the Faculty and ensures the Faculty operating and capital budgeting process is consistent with Seneca’s strategic plan, and that allocation of resources are based on established priorities;

Recruits, manages and develops administrative staff, and oversees the recruitment and development of faculty and staff;

Participates in a range of initiatives and develops strong, collaborative working relationships with other faculties and departments at Seneca and the external post-secondary education community;

Supports and promotes opportunities for continued professional development and research activity amongst faculty;

Provides leadership as the Senior Editor for College Quarterly, an academic peer-reviewed journal serving college educators.


Qualifications:
Education
Minimum completed Master’s degree in a related discipline, a PhD is strongly preferred.

Experience and Skills

Minimum of twelve (12) years’ of progressive academic leadership experience.

Teaching and curriculum development at the postsecondary level is required.

Strategic and operational planning experience is required.

Extensive experience developing and managing budgets, and a track record of leadership that promotes financial stability and sustainability.

Experience in handling a range of Human Resource related issues and working within a unionized environment.

Exemplary problem solving skills, including the ability to apply creativity to address complex issues and initiatives.

Comprehensive understanding of the issues facing the Ontario college system.

A demonstrated commitment to technology enabled, experiential and cross-disciplinary learning.

Experience leading stakeholders, faculty and professionals in partnership development activity, including academic partners, community and associations.

Evidence of a highly collaborative, transparent, and consultative leadership style.

Exceptional interpersonal and communications skills.

Dedication to student success and a commitment to learning and development.
