The Centre for Accessible Learning and Counselling Services at Centennial College is hiring a Counsellor to support mental health and accessibility among a diverse student population. Reporting to the Director, Equitable Learning, Health and Wellness, the successful incumbent will provide counselling support to students accessing the Centre for Accessible Learning and Counselling Services. The Counsellor will engage in a range of mental health and accessibility supports in a psychotherapeutic environment, including: conducting initial assessments of student need and development of personalized care and interim accommodation plans through intake appointments; providing counselling supports through brief, goal-oriented, single-session approaches; providing longer term counselling for students with complex mental health or accessibility needs; developing Individualized Support Plans and academic accommodations in collaboration with students and faculty; and providing crisis interventions and case management including campus and community referrals. The incumbent will serve students within a multi-campus institution through in-person and virtual supports to support broader efforts to enhance wellness and accessibility through provision of psychoeducation groups, psychoeducational workshops, faculty consultations and training / development opportunities.
- • Supports assessment of student needs through robust and validated intake assessment tools related to mental health and accessibility; works to align mental health and accessibility assessment approaches with approaches used within health and community service sectors to facilitate streamlined information sharing, referrals and collaborative care.
• Assesses functional abilities and limitations of students with disabilities in a postsecondary academic setting; interprets medical documentation and psychoeducational assessments in building individualized support / education plans; works with faculty, administrators, and other educational professionals in supporting accessibility and student accommodations.
• Provides goal-oriented, brief counselling supports and interventions from student intake through referrals and ongoing 1-1 psychotherapeutic supports offered within CALCS.
• Establishes strong working relationships among colleagues in CALCS, faculty, campus and community partners who will be part of collaborative care teams supporting a range of student needs.
• Builds, follows through on, and monitors personalized care plans and/or Individualized Support Plans with students, which equip students with the tools they need to actively manage their health and wellness and access their learning through online tools and resources, self-management strategies, referral to a range of campus services (financial services, career services, success advisors), plans for ongoing support through CALCS, and referrals to community services.
• Responds to and leads the management of student mental health / accessibility-related crisis situations where appropriate and when called upon.
• Completes risk assessments and management plans with students presenting with suicide risk; provides timely intervention, safety planning, support and referral as required.
• Facilitates bridging and referrals for students who require complex or specialized supports through local community and health services.
• Consults with faculty and develops resources / training sessions for educational teams on counselling and accessibility related issues.
• Attends team meetings, participates in case discussions and meetings with the Counselling & CSD Coordinators.
• Consults with college stakeholders such as the life safety and security team, case management, senior leadership to provide mental health and accessibility-related expertise and case-specific advice as appropriate and necessary.
• Delivers counselling with sensitivity to ethno-cultural, religious, sexual orientation and gender issues, which arise in counselling/teaching situations.
• Maintains professional documentation and statistical information.
• Participates in an appropriate professional body and engages in professional development activities in order to meet the changing demands of the position.
- • University-level credential enabling engagement in provision of mental health / accessibility services and psychotherapeutic interventions (Bachelors of Social Work and/or Master’s Degree in counselling or a related discipline; e.g., Social Work, Education, etc.) from an accredited program.
• Minimum five (3) years counselling experience with youth, young adults, and adults, including those with a range of disabilities.
• At least three (3) years of counselling / mental health / accessibility services within a community organization or health care setting, with demonstrated experience coordinating care across sectors, agencies, and interdisciplinary professionals.
• Successful completion of supervised counselling by a recognized counselling professional.
• Member of a relevant professional association (e.g., College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario or College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers).
• Experience conducting client assessments, including risk assessments and a demonstrated capacity to make appropriate recommendations for treatment, support and risk management.
• Proven clinical experience and the ability to offer time-limited therapeutic interventions based on sound counselling modalities; training in evidence-based, brief therapeutic interventions such as single session therapy.
• Demonstrated competence in managing crisis situations independently and working with clients who present with severe emotional difficulties.
• Strong working knowledge of mental health and accessibility issues and experience supporting clients with complex mental health challenges and disabilities in a youth / emerging adult population; experience with provision of services in an educational setting an asset, including assessment of disability related needs and practical recommendations for accommodation.
• Expansive knowledge of relevant community services and mental health / accessibility resources in the community; Strong existing relationships with community service providers an asset.
• Demonstrated competency in addressing issues of sexuality, disability, gender, ethnicity, class and religion within a complex multi-racial and multi-faith environment.
• Demonstrated commitment to, knowledge of, and skill in application of anti-oppressive practices within a counselling environment.
• Experience working autonomously and as part of an interprofessional / collaborative care team.
• Excellent communication (verbal/written/presentation) skills
• Demonstrated research and assessment skills related to program evaluation and assessment of client outcomes
