Position Summary:

The School of Communications, Media, Arts and Design at Centennial College is seeking a dynamic, digitally-skilled and forward-thinking professor to teach in the school’s post-secondary, joint degree and post-graduate Journalism programs. The successful candidate will be able to connect with students from diverse backgrounds and help them develop a solid foundation in the fundamentals of journalism and an expertise in mobile, social and multimedia storytelling. The Professor will be a champion of change who demonstrates a willingness to explore and embrace emerging tools and technologies in media and to instruct students in their application. Reporting to the Chair, Communications and Media, the successful candidate will teach in the multiplatform newsroom and the field, as well as in classrooms and computer laboratories at the Story Arts Centre.

• Use effective interpersonal communication skills and strategies to guide students to an ethical understanding of the role and practice of journalism and storytelling in a changing media environment
• Develop and implement teaching strategies and tactics to coach students in the fundamentals of researching, interviewing, writing and producing professional quality multimedia journalism
• Remain current in the field and actively contribute to the development of new courses and curriculum to position Centennial as a leader in digital, mobile and contemporary journalism
• Be fearless and nimble in embracing change within the industry and leading it in the classroom
• Champion new opportunities for storytellers through fostering and promoting the development of transferable skills
• Use effective interpersonal communication skills with students, faculty, management, external partners and community members, showing sensitivity to intercultural communication
• Discover, explore and embrace opportunities for effective and productive collaboration within the college and the community, including with media partners
• Provide and promote a respectful and supportive environment based on the principles of inclusion, equity and diversity
• Work effectively in a team-based environment
• Use academic technology effectively to enhance and support learning
• Evaluate student achievement of learning outcomes using a variety of techniques
• Critically examine learning materials and classroom instructional practice for discriminatory bias or barriers
• Provide academic support, coaching and career guidance to students as part of regularly scheduled office hours
• Maintain contacts with relevant industry and professional associations
• Remain current in technical knowledge in instructional delivery techniques
• Maintain records of student grades/assessments and participate in meetings and activities pertinent to faculty responsibilities

• A bachelor’s degree with a minimum of five years of relevant and recent digital newsroom experience including managing text, audio and video content on a number of platforms.
• Solid background in the fundamentals of journalism.
• Experience in analytics and algorithms in a news environment and ability to integrate these tools in the classroom and newsroom
• Expertise in the use of digital and social media in multimedia storytelling and distribution.
• A proven record of exploring, embracing implementing and providing training on new tools and technologies in the field of journalism other than social media.
• An understanding of the business of media, including business models, is an asset.
• Demonstrated experience teaching at the post-secondary level or comparable experience in staff development and training.
• Demonstrated understanding of diversity, equity and inclusion to meet the needs of our diverse students, staff and college community.
• Knowledge of adult education principles and the role of learning outcomes, instructional approaches and evaluation techniques to be used is an asset.
• Experience in developing course or learning materials is an asset.
